The Big Bang is Coming

The point of no return. One book, one week to go, and the moment where a singular story begins to expand.

A multicoloured depiction of the big bang, with the Reality Quake series logo overlayed.
A somewhat nebulous image reflecting a somewhat nebulous set of feelings. Go figure.

A week before a book comes out is a strange place to be. Everything is finished, but nothing has happened yet. All the energy is still contained. All the mass. All the possibility.

For years, this story has been like the singularity at the start of the universe. Dense. Unobservable. Compressed into one small, intense point on my hard drive and in my head. Potential energy.

But in a week’s time… boom.

Publication isn’t the end of a journey. It’s a rebirth. The explosion of all that potential into a universe of visible possibility and tangible output.

Once it’s out there, readers will meet these characters on their own terms. They’ll interpret them differently. Take different things from them. Some trajectories will align neatly with how I see the book. Some won’t. That’s not a problem. That’s the beautiful thing about breathing life into a story and then setting it free.

Here we all are, together on the precipice. One week away from the Big Bang that starts the Reality Quake universe. The Boy From Elsewhere is the first galaxy in an ever-growing expanse of stories, characters, and hidden jokes about sandwiches.

It’s been a long journey. And yet, the journey is only just about to begin.

My role shifts now. Not author as architect, but author as observer. Watching with curiosity. With pride. With the quiet joy of seeing something you made take on a life that is so much bigger and less predictable than you ever imagined it could be.

And, of course, continuing to shepherd this creation as I craft the second book in the series. And the third. And… well, who knows.

So here I am. Ready. Waiting. Standing very still, everything poised. Knowing the explosion hasn’t happened yet, but absolutely will.

All that energy. All that possibility.

Time to boldly go.
